Learn to Speak Spanish from Spanish Speaking People

Learning a new language, like Spanish, is often quite difficult. It is thought to be more difficult for adults because of the 'can't teach an old dog new tricks' mentality. The thinking goes that an adult is so set in their ways that they can't learn new vocabulary or grammar. Or they are too comfortable speaking their native language that they are not willing to try to learn a new language. And whilst this is true to some extent, I don't think it is totally correct. I think the biggest problem adults have, and even teenagers for that matter, is focus. If you lead an active life - you work, have a busy social life and all your friends speak English then there is very little chance that you will be able to give a new language the time and attention that is needed to master it. If you can give the language your fully focused attention you will be surprised how quickly you will progress. And the best way to learn is to socialize with native Spanish speaking people.

People in the United States are ideally placed to take advantage of this way to learn Spanish. Hispanic and Latin American communities are some of the fastest growing immigrant communities in the US. Hearing someone speak Spanish is becoming almost as common as hearing someone speak English from coast to coast; in some areas, Spanish is actually more common.

Should you simply walk up to the first Spanish speaking person you see and ask them to teach you to speak Spanish? I wouldn?t recommend it. Try to get involved in the Spanish speaking community. Go to events that are organized by them. Offer help to new immigrants or people in that community. Above all, make friends and develop relationships with Spanish Speaking people.

By simply going to a social engagement you might learn numerous Spanish words. You will also get a glimpse into the culture of the community. Often this can make your Spanish learning more concrete. Like putting a face to a name, seeing a Spanish community event can put the words that are used to describe them in context and make your understanding more clear.

The same can be said for business. If you have Spanish speaking customers or colleagues then you can learn from them. If you are living in a part of the country where business is done in Spanish, then learning Spanish is not only a nice thing to be able to do but should be a necessity. Necessity is the best motivational force you need when learning a new language.

Get acquainted with people who speak Spanish as a first language at work or socially. If you are lucky there will be one or two among them who speak English fluently as well. This will be the individual you should approach to see if they would be willing to offer their assistance. They will probably be more than happy to do so, as long as you are willing to accommodate their schedule; learning English is a difficult process, and teaching you to speak Spanish will not only allow them to practice their English a bit, it will give them someone else with whom they can communicate.

Of course, not everyone is in a location to do this or the circumstances aren't quite right. The alternative to learning Spanish from a native speaker is to get a Spanish course. Make sure it has an audio component that features a native Spanish speaker so that you can hear an authentic accent and learn from that.
