Family and its importance

We are socialized to understand that families are the most socially accepted and valued means for raising children. What goes on in the household is a private matter and should be sheltered from public scrutiny and regulations; family life is best left to families, not burdened by institutions like the state, courts and service agencies. The shift from child-centered to family-centered resulted because it was believed that the child?s own home should not be broken for reasons of poverty. It is in society?s best interest to support parents in their childrearing roles, to enable them to fulfill their obligations, and to hold them responsible for the care and support of their children.

Even though, we, as social workers, decide to do what is in the best interest of the child, by strengthening the family. What constitutes a family? When we speak of family, we automatically assume that family consists of a father, mother a child or children. We rarely think of family as a single-parented household, same-sex parents or grandparents who are raising children as families. Many individuals have many different meanings for ?family.? Others might consider family to be only blood related. We do not have to be related by blood or law or by a specific name to be considered family.

Family preservation services are designed to help families at risk or in crisis, often because the child is in imminent risk of being placed out of the home because of abuse or neglect. The goals of family preservation movement are to prevent placement, prevent replacement and give services such as the return of the child to their home. The values and beliefs that underlie this movement are that children need families, they are better off in their own families. One of their beliefs is that safety is the first concern for both the child and the parents.

Family is the most valued thing in this society but yet we all seem to have different thoughts of what family means. I strongly believe that family preservation was put forward because of the strong belief in the attachment theory. Attachments lie at the heart of family life; they create bonds that can provide care and protection across the life cycle. In the post-modernism world, there are either multiple realities or no reality. In a post-modernistic view, I would say that there would not be such thing as children getting hurt by their love ones. The world would be carefree and we would not have to worry about such thing. Each one of us has our own post-modernistic views of the modern world, we just seem to visualize them as some things that will never be.
